Founded in 2001 by Washington State educator Jordeen Hays, Music Lessons On Wheels was met with immediate success. Word of her fundamental philosophy of “learning to play an instrument should be a privilege for all” coupled with her pragmatic approach to instruction began to spread throughout the Seattle area. By 2003 Jordeen had formulated much of the curriculum we use today.
In 2006, Jordeen brought in music teacher and administrator Jeanne Freng (MA) as Executive Director. With a solid background in music, music instruction and professional administrative training, the company has thrived under Jeanne’s careful eye and attention to detail.
Our teachers join us from a variety of musical and educational backgrounds, but what they all have in common is the ability to communicate their love of music to our students. We are very careful in our choice of teachers. They first must pass a background check, they must be good, patient communicators, highly skilled in their instrument, and they must have a love and respect for children. They are then trained via workshops and on-site apprenticing to ensure they have a complete grasp of our system and the key aspects of successful keyboarding instruction.
We help the child become a full musician, encompassing more than merely playing the instrument, but including the performance of music as well. “Confronting skills” says Jordeen, “the ability to confront and communicate with an audience is essential to success in almost any field of endeavor, and recitals and performances of a musical nature begin developing these skills at a young age. I find no higher joy than seeing the ability and self-esteem of a child shine through when they start to play and compose music.”
